  1. 1. What were your successes in 2009?
This year has been very busy. Rare coins continue to be in high demand from both collectors and investors. Hard assets have clearly been a smart move in the last few years. Clients seem to be more interested in preserving wealth than making money. Many were very shaken by the last year's financial turmoil. We have also been quite busy buying coins from those who need cash. At Mid-American we try very hard to make a tight market in every series of U.S. coinage. This has been a great strategy for our firm.
  2. 2. Where do you expect to find your opportunities in 2010?
Our companies will concentrate on great service and information. Rare coin collectors love information. The more people know about a series, the more they are willing to spend. Much of my time is spent on research and publishing.
  3. 3. How do you expect the overall 2010 market to compare to 2009?
Unless the bullion market really explodes, I expect 2010 to be about the same as 2009. If the precious metals market were to drop, business could get pretty slow. I firmly believe, however, that 2010 could be a break-out year for metals. Trillion-dollar-plus deficits are unprecedented and the ramifications could be profound.
  4. 4. What would give you the biggest boost in 2010?
When I try to explain what I do to people outside of the coin business, they are amazed. When most businesses get very busy they can call the manufacturer or distributor and order more product. In the coin business the hunt is always on for fresh product. The biggest boost for my company would be to buy a large collection.
  5. 5. What is your biggest concern for 2010?
Not buying a large collection is my biggest concern. Actually, it is becoming harder and harder to find nice rare coins. I travel to nearly every major coin show in the United States. The smaller dealers have less and less inventory every year. The major players now control a much larger share of the rare coin market. Buying coins has become very competitive.
  6. 6. Has the hot bullion market helped or hurt you? Why?
The hot bullion market has definitely been a help. A rising tide lifts all ships. The constant barrage of ads in the media about buying gold has been a help as well.
  7. 7. Will your clients be in a buying mood in 2010?
The ones with money will be spending if they find what they need. We mostly sell high-end merchandise, and most of my clients are thrilled if you happen to find something on their want list. As stated above, however, this is becoming harder every year. The U.S. Mint has lots of new programs slated for next year as well. This should stimulate buying from new collectors.
  8. 8. What will your clients be most interested in buying in 2010?
Quality coins. The market is becoming much more quality conscience. Dark, unattractive coins now sell for substantial discounts. My best advice to readers is to know what you are buying. Because when you go to sell it will make a big difference if you have been selective. Take a grading class!
  9. 9. What are the effects of tight credit?
My bank has been fine. There has been no change in my line of credit or operations. It is easy to borrow money from a bank — just prove you really don't need it.
  10. 10. What action can hobby papers take to give you a boost?
Provide original, interesting and informative research. As I stated in one of the questions above, people love information. Also, being positive and not focusing on negative issues help. The rare coin market is not perfect, but there are lots of great stories to be told.
