Garrett to seek ANA Board Seat

Professional rare coin dealer Jeff Garrett has announced his candidacy for a seat on the board of the American Numismatic Association.

Garrett notes that the ANA has made great progress in the last year and a half, but much more needs to done. “The membership of the ANA is of prime concern. The hobby has expanded ten fold in the last two decades, yet the membership numbers remain stagnant.” Garrett believes a solid membership base is critical to the financial strength of the ANA. Garrett has been a professional rare coin dealer for over 30 years, and he feels his experience will be of great use to the club. “I have attended every ANA Summer and Spring Show since 1974.The selection of ANA Convention Cities has been a hot topic in recent years. My knowledge as a dealer, who has attended all of these shows (good and not-so-good), will be used to guide the association in selecting sites which bring the most benefit to the membership.” Garrett is also very concerned with the financial footing of the organization. “I look forward to being a part making sure the ANA has the funds to fulfill the membership needs now and for future generations.” Garrett has previously served for over 15 years on the board of the Professional Numismatist Guild, having been Treasurer and President of the prestigious organization.

Jeff Garrett began his coin collecting the all-American way, with Lincoln Cents. In 1969 a family friend gave him a Lincoln cent board. From that time, coins became the focus of his life. While growing up in the Tampa Bay area in Clearwater Florida, Jeff became very active in several local clubs, serving as a junior officer of the Clearwater Coin Club in the 1970’s. He was mentored at an early age by many of the area dealers. He has been a member of the ANA for over 25 years with life membership number 3124. Because local coin clubs were so important in Jeff’s early life, he felt it would be important to foster the same atmosphere of enthusiastic collectors that he enjoyed as a youth. Several years ago Jeff organized the Bluegrass Coin Club in Lexington, Kentucky. Today, the club is very healthy, with over thirty members in attendance each month. The ANA has long been an important part of his life. In the mid-1970’s Garrett was fortunate to have received a scholarship to the ANA Summer Seminar. Garrett notes “This was my first time to fly on an airplane, and the Summer Seminar had an incredible impact on my early numismatic journey. It was after that trip that I decided I wanted to be a professional coin dealer. I truly believe the ANA Summer Seminars are extremely important and should not be cut back for budget reasons. I will make every effort to be sure the Summer Seminars meet the needs of the membership without having a negative impact of the ANA’s finances.”

Garrett is co-author of the “Encyclopedia of United States Gold Coins”, a massive study of every gold coin produced by the United States. It was awarded the “book of the year” by the Numismatic Literary Guild and the Professional Numismatist Guild. The project was done in cooperation with the Smithsonian Institute. Jeff has been a consultant for the museum in recent years, assisting in fund raising, strategy and exhibit reviews. Garrett was instrumental in the recent collaboration of the ANA and the Smithsonian Institute’s, Traveling Coin Program that will feature many of the nation’s most important rarities that will be seen for the first time outside of Washington D.C. “I am excited to be a part of the new rare coin exhibit that will be opening in the main gallery of the Museum of American History this summer.” Garrett notes. This is an important step for the National Numismatic Collection. The coins have been off display for the last few years and it has taken considerable effort to mount the new exhibit. Fund raising has been a critical part of Garrett’s effort for the NNC, and he will bring this experience to ANA for its future needs. Garrett notes “Education is critical for the success of numismatics. We all need be a part of sharing the wonderful world of coin collecting.”

Garrett describes his expertise as being a “dealer’s dealer.” With a network of professionals he has established over 30 years, he helps with research, strategy, and the sale of acquisitions. Over the course of his career, Garrett has handled nearly every United States rarity. Another important aspect of his career is his membership in the Professional Numismatic Guild, to which he has belonged since 1982. In 2003 he was given the Abe Kosoff Founders Award by the PNG, that organizations highest honor for work promoting the hobby and organization. Although he spends most of his time buying and selling coins, Garrett enjoys research and the study of rare coins. In 2003 his first published work, “100 Greatest United States Coins” book was award the best book award by both the Numismatic Literary Guild as well as the Professional Numismatist Guild. This landmark numismatic reference has been instrumental in popularity and price explosion of so-called “trophy” coins in the last several years. He is co-author of the “Redbook of Auction Records” series of books and “United States Coinage- A Study by Type”. Garrett also serves as valuations editor of the Red Book for Whitman Publishing. The Red Book is considered the bible of numismatics, and is the most widely distributed price guide in the industry.
